Foxconn, Apple File the Most Patents in Taiwan in 2013

Taiwan's Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs said on February 11 that, in 2013, Foxconn and Apple are ranked first, respectively, in the number of patent applications by domestic and foreign companies in Taiwan. Foxconn filed 3,086 patent applications last year, down 8.35% year on year, as a result of the company's adjustment in patent portfolio to increase US patents. Wistron, which replaced ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute) to assume the second place, registered 598 patent applications. Foreign companies lodged 32,497 patent applications in Taiwan last year, with Apple ascending to the first place with 581 applications, followed by Samsung Electronics (458) and Samsung Display (425). In particular for the mobile device sector, Apple applied 410 invention patents in Taiwan last year while HTC made 225.
